Frequently Asked Questions
YAMAHA YZF-R6 2003-2004 VS YZF-R6 2005 Fairing Compatibility
Q1: Are fairings for YZF-R6 2003-2004 interchangeable with 2005 YZF-R6?
A1: NO, they are NOT fully compatible. Although both share the same 5SL chassis code, the front suspension, lower fairing mount points, nose shape, tail section and side panel cutouts are revised for 2005, so the complete fairing kits cannot swap directly. Do not mix the two-year groups when ordering.
Q2: Do YZF-R6 2003-2004 and 2005 fairings look similar but just have different mounting holes?
A2: They are visually close at first glance, but the difference is not only mounting hole positions. 2005 switched to inverted front fork and radial calipers, so the nose cowl, lower fairing, side panels and tail section have reshaped profiles, clearance cutouts and revised mounting bosses. Even if you drill new holes manually, the fairing will rub against the fork or caliper and show ugly gaps. They are not interchangeable.
Q3: Can I install individual panels from 2003-2004 onto a 2005 R6?
A3: Not recommended. Even if some panels look similar visually, the mounting holes, bracket positions and clearance for the front fork/caliper will not align. It will cause fitment gaps, rubbing or impossible installation.
Q4: Do they share the same frame code (5SL)?
A4: Yes, both 2003–2004 and 2005 belong to the 5SL frame series, but Yamaha updated the front end assembly and bodywork mounting structure for 2005, which makes fairings non-interchangeable.
Q5: How to confirm which fairing kit I need before buying?
A5: 1. Check your motorcycle production year first. 2. Check front fork type: Conventional fork = 2003-2004; Inverted fork = 2005. 3. Match the year group strictly when selecting fairing kit, do not select “2003-2005” as one combined set.
Q6: Will the windscreen fit between 2003-04 and 2005?
A6: Windscreen is also different, the nose cowl profile differs, windscreens are not cross compatible.
